Professional Exchange and Global Connections: Welcoming Hanz to our Centers in Nepal 🇳🇵🇳🇱
At Volunteer Society Nepal (VSN), we believe that the most impactful work happens when we share knowledge across borders. This week, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting Hanz from the Netherlands, who visited us to see the sustainable community projects where his wife, Ellen, has been volunteering for the past four weeks.
Beyond being a supportive partner, Hanz brought a wealth of professional experience from his career working at a disability center in the Netherlands. This made his visit to our Center for Children with Disabilities particularly meaningful.
Bridging Expertise
Hanz spent time touring our facilities and observing our programs for women’s empowerment and disability care. It was a wonderful opportunity for a professional exchange—comparing notes on how different cultures approach care, inclusivity, and empowerment for the most vulnerable members of society.
Family and Philanthropy
While Ellen has been busy teaching at a local school and supporting the Women`s Empowerment Center, having Hanz witness the daily impact of her work highlights the ripple effect of volunteering. When one person volunteers, an entire community of supporters—including family back home—becomes part of the story.
We are incredibly grateful for Hanz’s visit, his professional insights, and the continued dedication shown by Ellen during her time with us.
Partnerships like these remind us that while our challenges may differ by region, our goal of providing dignity and care remains a universal language.

It’s always the hardest goodbyes that remind us how much a journey meant.
The school in Phaplu held a deeply emotional farewell for Nikita Rykelykhuizen from the Netherlands. After 4 weeks of sharing her heart, her art, and her vibrant energy, it was time for the students and teachers to say "Pheri Bhetaula" (See you again).
There weren`t many dry eyes in the courtyard as the students lined up to offer Khata (traditional silk scarves) and handmade cards to their favorite art teacher. In a place where art classes didn`t exist before her arrival, Nikita gave these children a new way to see the world and themselves.
"The hardest thing in life is to say goodbye to someone you don’t want to leave."
Nikita came to the Himalayas as a volunteer, but she leaves as a daughter of this community. From teaching six different grades to celebrating Losar and hiking the local trails, she embraced every second of the Himalayan life.
Thank you, Nikita, for the colors you’ve left behind in our hearts and our classrooms. Safe travels back to the Netherlands—you will always have a home here in the mountains. 🇳🇵🇳🇱
