Volunteering in Nepal: A Journey of Rediscovery and Empowerment

Volunteering in Nepal is a transformative experience that not only impacts the lives of those you help but also enriches your own. Sakurako Tanaka, a 16-year-old volunteer from Japan, embodies this transformative spirit. Having lived in Nepal from the age of 8 to 10, Sakurako returned to the country with a more mature perspective, eager to contribute to the community that once felt like home. Her three-week volunteering program with Volunteer Society Nepal (VSN) has been a journey of rediscovery, teaching, and empowerment.

A Warm Welcome Back to Nepal

Sakurako’s decision to volunteer in Nepal was driven by her deep connection to the country and her desire to give back. Staying with a Nepali host family, she is immersed in the local culture, language, and traditions, providing her with a truly authentic experience. Living with a host family has allowed her to see Nepal through new eyes, deepening her appreciation for the vibrant community and its rich cultural heritage.

Empowering Women Through Education

At the Women’s Empowerment Center, Sakurako plays a crucial role in teaching Math and English to the women. Her efforts are not just about imparting knowledge but also about empowering these women to gain confidence and independence. Education is a powerful tool for change, and Sakurako’s contribution is helping to open new doors for these women, providing them with the skills they need to improve their lives and the lives of their families.

Bringing Music and Creativity to CBIA School

Sakurako’s talents extend beyond the classroom. At CBIA School, she shares her love for music and the arts with the students. As a skilled pianist, she teaches music, including piano, ukulele, and singing. Her classes also involve creative activities like origami, dance, knitting, jewelry making, and even Japanese language lessons. These diverse activities not only enrich the students’ learning experience but also foster a love for the arts and cross-cultural understanding.

Volunteering in Nepal with VSN offers a unique and fulfilling experience. For Sakurako, it has been an opportunity to reconnect with her childhood memories, contribute to the community, and grow personally. Her journey highlights the profound impact that volunteer work can have on both the volunteers and the communities they serve.

Sakurako’s story is a testament to the power of volunteering in Nepal. Her dedication and enthusiasm have left a lasting impression on the women and students she has worked with, and her experiences will undoubtedly inspire others to embark on their own volunteer journeys.

Why not combine a volunteer placement with a trip to Nepal’s famous tourist areas? Choose from cultural tours, Himalayan treks and jungle safaris and experience everything Nepal has to offer!

Nepal is an astonishingly beautiful and diverse country, ranging from the well-known peaks of the Himalayas to the low-lying regions of the Terai. The Nepali people also foster a wealth of cultural diversity, with over 70 languages or dialects and scores of traditional festivals celebrated throughout the year. The nation deserves to take pride in having a unique, and indeed very rich cultural and historical background. Nepal is also an under-developed country, with low rates of literacy, high rates of poverty and a persistent gender imbalance. The government is frequently unable to provide sufficient or adequate education and health facilities in rural areas, and those in urban areas are poorly resourced.

We invite you to experience the real Nepal, through participation in a Volunteer Society Nepal tour and volunteering program in Nepal. Words are ever too limited to express the beauty and attraction of the geographical and cultural landscape, and the warmth and generosity of the Nepali people because it is really a feeling of the heart entering through one’s vision.

We are extremely happy to share with you that our tourism Experts have consistently been involved in Nepal’s tourism sector for more than 20 years as trekking and tour guide who has an excellent knowledge of the mountains, cities and cultural sites of the country.
